Welcome to the John Rennie where we offer an exciting moveable feast from cream teas to four course wedding banquets.
We know that good food and drink is key to the enjoyment and success of any event as well as the memories guests take away with them.
Quite simply it’s different with the “ John Rennie “ and the food and drink will be one of many highlights of your experience. Good ingredients, well prepared with interesting menus, beautifully presented with efficient unobtrusive service, these are our aims for you to experience.
Gourmet Delicious are the experienced outside caterers that together with Bath Narrowboats take care of you and your guests.
Gourmet Delicious is the sister company to Bath Narrowboats based at The Angelfish restaurant that organise, produce, supply & serve gourmet delicious modern european cuisine that you order for your event.
During the year the John Rennie caters for all occasions big or small using locally sourced fresh produce at various budgets . The boat's unique design offers both intimacy for sit-down dinner parties and space for full capacity buffets.
Do take time to read through all the menus to understand all the various options that are available to your party.
Some points to remember are as follows. Think about the time of year, length of trip and time of departure as some menus won’t suit some occasions; for example a breakfast is best in the morning not evening, hot starter soups are just what you want in the winter but not on a hot day and canapés & champagne are not enough to feed your guests on a four hour trip.

We do have various criteria for you to follow in the interests of economies of scale, minimum orders, special orders, times, choices & service. These are very important to us in order for us to maintain our high standards for your experience and service. Please do not be offended if we refuse a request and remember that you are hiring a private floating luxury restaurant.

There is a minimum order for cream teas and also canapes of 25 people and 20 people for all other menus. We are happy to service your event with staff, crew, food and drink for less than 20 people BUT you will be charged the minimum number for whichever menus are ordered.

We have beautiful English oak table tops which do not require table cloths. We do provide cream coloured linen runners and linen napkins for the three course meals but not for the cream tea trips, tea time trips, plated platters and ploughmans. However, should you require linen tablecloths and linen napkins then there is an extra charge (please see 'table layout' for further details).

We are a 'Restaurant' and DO NOT accept food and drink to be brought on board by the customer.

We require final menu choices and numbers 60 hours ( 3 days ) before departure as all food is specially ordered, prepared and catered for. Remember, we need time to pre-order specialist produce, prepare and organise our staff so we cannot accept changes 48 hours ( 2 days ) prior to departure, the day before, the night before or on the day. You will be charged for the numbers booked.
If you do choose a two course or three course menu, please choose four starters, four main courses and depending on numbers the appropriate number of desserts and to remember it is very important that you make a record of what each guest will be eating, to let us know and to bring a copy on board. This does avoid any confusion on the day. It is useful to have table nameplates with the guests choices written on the back as well. All this adds to the smoothness of the service.
When choosing the roast meals, please choose only two of the four roast options.
We do have a large choice of desserts but we request you to restrict the choice to two for 20 - 29 people, three for 30 - 39 people and four for 40 - 56 people.
You are welcome to bring a cake on board BUT you will be charged £ 1.00 per person to cover the cost of plates, cutlery, napkins and washing. We do not allow chocolate cakes as these melt and cause a lot of mess. You will not be charged if you bring a cake if you order desserts.
We are not keen for cakes to be brought on because of health & hygiene reasons as we cannot guarantee the due diligence process of our strict food & safety standards. We also do not allow food to be taken off the boat for health & hygiene reasons.
We do carry a fully stocked bar that includes a small selection of house wines but we also have a much larger carefully selected wine list with many world class wines direct from vineyards from all over the world. We require 60 hours notice for selected wine orders off this list. We do not allow any wine, sparkling wine, champagne or spirits or soft drinks and water to be brought onto the boat and we reserve the right to either confiscate any brought on or charge the event organiser.
We sell bottled water on board in small and large bottles. We cannot serve glasses or carafes of water as the water on board is not treated and not drinkable.
Service is at the client's discretion, is greatly appreciated and is shared out with the Head chef, Sous chef, Waitresses, Bar staff and Skipper.

Lastly, as experienced chefs we offer a very personal service between the client and the boat ensuring good communication to ensure that you have a super experience. We are very approachable and endeavour to incorporate your requests as best as possible with regard to the menus. We hope these menus have whetted your appetite but the proof of the pudding is of course, in the eating. You are most welcome to visit The Angelfish Restaurant where we have different menus but you are able to taste a similar experience and enjoy the setting.

JOHN RENNIE AFTERNOON TEA MENU

In the early 19th century, in the midst of the industrial revolution and once the Kennet & Avon canal had been constructed, it was popular at the time to travel up the canal to Dundas aqueduct and Bradford on Avon from Sydney wharf in Bath as a special outing. A trip was highly esteemed in those days and you can recreate the glamour of yesteryear by choosing a cream tea, cakes and sandwiches. The choice is yours to make.

To celebrate all that is English, this is one of our most popular choices. As you navigate the Kennet & Avon canal taking in the sights
of the historic Limpley Stoke Valley, enjoy freshly made scones with the finest clotted cream, jam and tea.
Freshly brewed LaVazza coffee is also available. Ideal for a 2.5 or 4 hr trip.

SCONES, JAM, BUTTER, CAKES & AFTERNOON TEA : £ 8.50 per head

Some guests prefer a wider range of teatime treats so with this choice we serve a selection of homemade
cake such as Chocolate fudge, Lemon drizzle, Coffee and walnut, Apricot flapjacks as well as scones
with jam & butter. Together with fresh tea or coffee, enjoy the trip down the canal. Ideal for a 2.5 or 4 hr trip.

SUMMER SANDWICHES : £ 8.00 per head

A selection of freshly made brown & white sandwiches served on silver platters. We fill the sandwiches
with a variety of different fillings such as tuna mayo cucumber, mature cheddar, cucumber, egg mayo and cress,
Wiltshire ham, prawn mayo etc and served with tea or coffee. This can be a better savoury option for a later trip where
scones & cakes maybe inappropriate. Ideal for a 2.5 or 4 hr trip.

SUMMER SANDWICHES & CREAM TEA : £ 11.00 per head

A real Mad Hatters tea party where we serve freshly made sandwiches together with the quintessential
English cream tea of scones, clotted cream , jam & tea. Enjoy your tea party while you drift along the canal.

Canapes are ideal as a small bite to go with a welcome drink as everyone arrives on the boat and sets off
or as a substitute to a starter followed by main course and dessert. Either way the different flavours will get everyone talking.
Our canapés are freshly made to order by our chefs using local ingredients.

A mixture of hot and cold buffet with a large selection of salads to choose from with a dessert to follow. Whilst there is no need to choose what’s on the buffet, it is necessary to pre-order the desserts.

HOG ROAST BUFFET : £ 12.50 per head

We are experienced hog roasters and there is nothing quite like it but a hog feeds around 110 people.
With the boat’s limitations, we cannot use a hog roaster on board but what we can do is roast a smaller one
in our ovens with crispy crackling. It’s more informal as we cover our buffet table with a selection of
homemade salads such as coleslaw, wholegrain mustard seed potato salad, carrot and poppy seed slaw,
beetroot & apple, pesto pasta, three pepper & red onion, tomato & onion and summer leaves.
We serve the pork sliced hot in large floured baps together with apple sauce.
A real fun way to enjoy a party meal that is ideal for a 2.5 , 4 hr trip or longer. Dessert & coffee are extra.

BARBECUE BUFFET : £ 12.50 per head

At our restaurants and at many outside catering events we have catered for many barbecues.
On the boat there’s not the room or safety for us to bring our barbeques. Instead, we cook various meats, fish etc
in our kitchen. It’s very informal as we cover our buffet table with a selection of beetroot & apple, pesto pasta,
three pepper & red onion, tomato & onion and summer leaves.
We bring out homemade burgers, homemade sausages, chicken drummers lightly cooked in BBQ sauce,
pork or chicken kebabs, vegetarian kebabs and fresh fish.
A real fun way to enjoy a summer party meal that is ideal for a 2.5 , 4 hr trip or longer. Dessert & coffee are extra.

ROAST MEALS :

Please note when choosing a roast meal for your trip, please choose either roast chicken & pork OR roast beef and lamb and not a mixture of all four roasts.

ROAST CHICKEN OR PORK : £ 11.50 per head

We serve a choice of either a whole chicken leg with wing or roast pork tenderloin together with herb
roast potatoes, fresh seasonal vegetables such as buttered carrots, honeyed parsnips, cauliflower,
broccoli and gravy.
This is ideal for a 4 hr trip or longer. It is necessary to pre-order the choice of meats.

ROAST CHICKEN OR PORK & DESSERT A : £ 16.00 per head

We serve a choice of either a whole chicken leg with wing or roast pork tenderloin together with herb
roast potatoes, fresh seasonal vegetables such as buttered carrots, honeyed parsnips, cauliflower,
broccoli and gravy.
This is ideal for a 4 hr trip or longer. It is necessary to pre-order the choice of meats and desserts.

This is a longer meal with a choice of starters. There is a choice of soups such as roasted vegetable soup
with crème fraiche swirl ( v ) OR tomato and basil OR parsnip and sweet potato soup, smoked salmon potato salad
parcel with rocket & olive oil or a duo of chicken liver parfait / mushroom tarragon pate with toast.
Please choose only one soup.
Second course is a choice of either a whole chicken leg with wing or roast pork tenderloin together with herb

This is a meal designed for a lunch or dinner party where guests are served at their tables. Whilst there is large selection,
we ask the organiser to choose four starters, four main courses and desserts ( according to numbers - 2 for 20 - 29, 3 for 30 - 39 and 4 for 40 - 56 ) for their party to choose from.
It is necessary for a pre-order. At the start of the trip, our waiters / waitresses will ask and note what each table
will be having so that we serve each table in turn. There will be a small delay between the first and last table but it
is important that each table is served together. Remember to bring your list of guests choices with you and to look
at the wine list. We carry a small selection of house wine on board but our larger wine list is off site and needs to be

The first is a simple, no choice menu which allows you to book the meal and not worry about choices. We have discounted the price at £ 17.00 for 2014.
The second menu priced at £ 19.50 is a larger menu offering four choices for starter, mains & dessert. All you need to do is find out what all your guest choices are.
Lastly, Christmas is for celebrating together so we have an extra special gastronimic menu priced at £ 24.50 that may make you and your guests undecided about which course to have.
